Chapter one. This is the original chapter one that was later cut, with a chunk of it shoved haphazardly into the original chapter three…

These are unfinished storyboards, roughs, but they give an idea of the storytelling and basic layout. Character designs were changing during the work on these, so characters during the run will change hairstyles, grow and lose mustaches, and change costumes. I have several versions of each chapter, I’ve tried to pick the best one, so some might things not always match up… exactly.

At the end, you’ll find the Christmas episode I did before starting work on ‘Haven’ proper.

So, this chapter was killed, but what was the problem? I designed it to introduce the backstory and characters without slapping you in the face with exposition (what we call in playwrighting ‘two maids talking’) and make you interested enough to want to read on.

So, that chapter got cut. Ah well.

Chapter one, take two, below:

Here we find that chunk of the cut first chapter. The story was cut up the panels and the mom/Brigid conversation dropped into this chapter. It didn’t work, but I had to make it work. I re-added the hand coming in, added new dialogue and art (I was forbidden to add new art), and fixed it the best I could, working with Glenn the storyboarder to make it as seamless as possible. Even still you can see the character’s original name ‘Kenyetta Ali’ on the pages of the yearbook.

The first ‘Haven’ scripts I worked on were the ‘Christmas’ specials there were to be used as an intro to the series. The script and storyboards were finished some two months before there were meant to be published, but such were the roadblocks to getting anything out the door that there were never published. In the balloons, you’ll see the character names were accidentally included. That was my fault.

The conceit here is that this is supposed to be an episode of Lightning and Streak, the Wonder Dog, a TV show from the 1960s. Lightning is the first of the ‘open’ supers, and one of the first to disappear.
